The Yezidi

The Yezidi are members of a small Kurdish religion who mainly live in Mosul (Northern Iraq) and are considered Satanists by Christians and Muslims for their worship of a religious character called “Shaytan” or “Satan”.  The founding of their religion goes back to antiquity and combines practices and beliefs of Mithraism, pre-Islamic Mesopotamian traditions, Christianity, and Islam.

The Yezidi believe that God created Melek Tawus, or Lucifer (otherwise known as Satan) who was the first of seven archangels that were made before Adam.  After Adam was created, God told the archangels to bow to Adam, but Satan refused.  In the Christian, Jewish, and Islamic traditions, Satan was cursed for his rebellion and cast out of heaven.  In the Yezidi tradition, however, God’s command was only a test, and he subsequently praised Satan for his rebellion and gave him jurisdiction over the whole earth.  Christians and Muslims consider this an insidious edit of the story, fabricated by Satan himself.
